What you should know about LAMMERGEIER PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE

Lammergeier is in the business of being stewards of the environment while being charming and excellent hosts to you. We’ve created a platform for you to have lots of fun, doing what you like doing best, in one of the most beautiful mountainous settings you can ask for. We have the Karringmelkspruit, and the gorges that come with having a mountain stream. We offer you clean, comfortable, cosy, country accommodation where you can relax or venture from to discover all the wonderful nooks and crannies on the reserve. Your favorite activity will dictate your favorite time. If you’re unsure, we’ll gladly help you figure that one out. A longstanding policy of biodynamic farming is followed, where a concerted effort to minimise the use of pesticides and herbicides are used. This has served to increase the bird and wildlife dramatically. The Isted family has been awarded multiple conservation awards. The farming enterprise specialises in producing high quality grass fed, free range beef. A village by the name of Isted was historically part of Denmark until 1918, when it was transferred to Germany following a referendum. The story of the South African Isted Family History begins with the immigration of the original 1820 Settlers into South Africa. The Isted family, along with the Sephtons and Gush families, moved to the area now known as of New England, Wartrail and Moshesesford. The area borders the former Transkei & Lesotho in the North Eastern Cape; right at the tip of the majestic Drakensberg Mountain Range known as the Witteberg. Jack Isted moved to the Witteberg from the original family area of Wartrail after he had completed his service as a B52 Bomber Pilot in WWII. Here he married Dorothy Torr and bought the original family farm, Ossa. Operations of sheep farming expanded and additional land was acquired. The operation still continues to expand and grow in the living memory of their youngest son Leslie Isted. The exciting yet challenging process of farming and tending the land as well as the introduction of eco-tourism in the form of Lammergeier Highlands Reserve is part of the vision of the Isted Family: not only to improve & expand the farming operations, but also to share the area with visitors who can appreciate the beauty of nature and the preservation thereof. majestically over the peaks of the Drakensberg, light falls gently across the streams and fields. The cry of the Lammergeier echoes through the valleys. Stalk wild trout in pristine rivers, embark on an expedition though mountains and valleys, hide out to spot the Lammergeier and his feathered friends, or simply relax in your charming countryside cottage. We've earned several awards over the years for our efforts to ensure the survival of indigenous bird-, game- and plant life. We invite you to come and experience the beauty that is Lammergeier Highlands Reserve.
